Sakkie Janse van Rensburg
Sakkie Janse van Rensburg is the Executive Director of Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He has a passion for providing service and solutions to the academic, administrative and research community and is familiar with developing ICT strategies and aligning them with those of the university.
Sakkie is the founder of eResearch and the African Research Cloud (ARC) at UCT. In 12 months, UCT researchers have more than tripled their use of central high performance computing (HPC) facilities for data intensive research. What this clearly demonstrates is that an effective eResearch strategy for any research-focused academic institution is simply non-negotiable. The ARC is also aimed at supporting researchers from all domains with access to a full suite of digitally enabled data and analytical resources on their desktop that is relevant to their domain of research. He believes that leading universities MUST have a strategy to ensure that their researchers are equipped with the latest techniques and tools to:
- Raise their research profile
- Improve collaboration
Accelerate research discovery
In addition, he is the Chair of the South African Access Federation (SAFIRE), Director ASAUDIT Leadership Institute and was the former Chair of the Association of South African University Directors of Information Technology.
